Coloured SEM of adipose tissue showing fat cells
Adipose tissue. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the large fat cells (adipocytes, blue/green) that make up adipose connective tissue. The majority of the interior of these cells is taken up with a large deposit of lipid. Adipocytes are one of the largest cell types in the human body, each cell being 100 to 120 microns in diameter. Adipose connective tissue forms a thick layer under the skin. It functions as an insulating layer and energy store.
