The Faculty of English Language and Literature is by far the largest English Department in the UK, with over 75 permanent postholders, a further 70 Faculty members, 900 undergraduates and 300 postgraduates. The Faculty has a very distinguished research and teaching record, covering all periods of English Literature.

The Faculty of English, University of Cambridge, is an international centre of excellence for the study, teaching and research in literature and literary criticism. The Faculty was founded in 1919 and has since been home to some of the most eminent critics, scholars, teachers and writers of English literature in the world.

"Formally established in 1906 with the appointment of William Henry Schofield, Harvard’s Department of Comparative Literature enjoyed a prestigious history throughout the twentieth century, and it has taken on an expanded role in the twenty-first century. With a faculty that has included such scholars as Irving Babbitt, Albert Lord, Harry Levin, Claudio Guillén, and Barbara Johnson, the department has played a crucial role in shaping what remains a polymorphous discipline. "

The Department of Comparative Literature at Yale is proud of a long tradition of excellence. We have long been a leading graduate program for the study of literature across the boundaries of national literatures and of other disciplines: law, history, the visual arts, and film. The Literature Major extends the department’s interdisciplinary study to Yale College students. The department encourages students to develop their skills of textual analysis while it challenges them to reflect theoretically on the acts of writing and reading, on the connections between literature and other realms of human experience. The guidelines of our programs allow students great flexibility in shaping their course of study and to pursue their individual intellectual interests.

The winner of the Man Booker Prize receives £50,000 and aims to promote the finest in fiction by rewarding the best novel of the year written by a citizen of the United Kingdom, the Commonwealth or the Republic of Ireland.To maintain the consistent excellence of the Man Booker Prize, judges are chosen from a wide range of disciplines, including critics, writers and academics, but also poets, politicians and actors, all with a passion for quality fiction. The Man Booker International Prize
is worth £60,000, the prize is awarded every two years to a living author who has published fiction either originally in English or whose work is generally available in translation in the English language. The winner is chosen solely at the discretion of the judging panel and there are no submissions from publishers.

The $3,000 PEN Translation Prize invites submissions of book-length translations from any language into English published during the current calendar year.
