The name 'Egypt' comes from the Greek Aegyptos which was the Greek pronunciation of the Egyptian name 'Hwt-Ka-Ptah' (which means House of the Spirit of Ptah, who was a very early God of the Ancient Egyptians).

In the predynastic period, Upper and Lower Egypt were politically separate from each other. According to tradition, the two regions were combined into one kingdom when Menes, ruler of Upper Egypt, conquered Lower Egypt and became the first pharaoh of a unified Egypt around 3000 BCE.
