http://research.uwcsea.edu.sg/eastlibpri/g2readersbuildgoodhabits

Summary

This unit will launch your reading year! This will be a year of growth & movement.Think of yourself as a reader and talk to others about your passions and interests around reading books. You will be expected to get everything going that you already know how to do- routines and procedures & book shopping for just right reading books. You will get to know your classroom library very well. You will work to build your reading time and stamina, ending the unit with an increased independent reading time from what you started at. Having a Reading Partner will give you the opportunity to talk with a classmate on a regular basis in a structured way, sharing your reactions and thoughts about the various books you've read.

I understand that....

  • Fluent readers group words together to help them gain meaning from what they read.
  • Illustrations help readers to understand and enjoy stories.
  • By placing ourselves in the world of a story, we explore our personal thoughts and feelings.
  • Talking about specific small moments in a text supports meaning.
  • Phonics helps the reader to decode words.

Symbols used on Author's pages

This author mainly writes novels. Books with different characters and settings. Each book is a whole story that does not require the reader to read previous or subsequent books.

This author is best known for writing books in a series. While each story can be read alone, the central character(s) appear in each book. The settings and plots are often the same or similar in each book.

This author writes sequential series. The books are more meaningful if they are read in order as characters and plots develop as the series progresses.

This author writes picture books. A picture book relies on the pictures to explain unwritten parts of the story or to tell a different story to the words. Picture book writers are not always illustrators.
