WS: Evaluating Sources: Look

http://research.uwcsea.edu.sg/eastlibpri/WSevaluating

What questions am I asking myself to help me to evaluate my source?

1. Skim and scan the information looking for keywords and key phrases that match your task

2. Is this information appropriate for my age and reading ability?

3. Does the source provide further information that is useful?
e.g glossary, diagrams, links, picture bibliography

4. Does the source provide up-to-date information or useful historical information?

Look for dates at the bottom of a webpage for a copyright date and/or and update date. In a book, look for the publication details, usually on the back of the title page or at the back of the book

5. Who is providing this information? What are their qualifications? Are they qualified to provide this information?

Read about the author or the organisation. Who published the information? Are they reputable? Look at the end of the URL to indicate authority. Beware of self-publishing.

6. Does the source provide a particular point of view? Should you seek out another point of view to get a balanced opinion?
